Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Open University?

A. Open University provides an opportunity for those people who are not currently admitted to and/or registered at CSULB (non-matriculated) to enroll in most courses offered by the regular university.

Q. How do I know if I am considered a matriculated student?

A. A matriculated student is one that is admitted to the University. If you are not sure whether or not you are admitted, please check with the Office of Enrollment Services (562) 985-5471. If you are not admitted (non- matriculated) then you can enroll as an Open University student through UCES.

Q. Can I attend Open University if I am a high school student?

A. Yes. High school students are welcome to attend CSULB through Open University as long as an official Letter of Recommendation from the high school principal or counselor is attached to the registration request form specifying if the credits earned are for college credits or high school credits.

Q. Can I register for Open University through the web site or by phone?

A. No, registration is only in-person during the Fall 2008 and Spring 2008 Open University Registration periods. During the Summer 2008 Open University registration period, registration is in-person, by mail, or drop box. Please refer to How To Register.

Q. What are the UCES Registration Window Hours?

A. Our regular business hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

During the Summer 2008 registration period, UCES will have extended hours the first week of registration, April 7 to April 11 and during the first week of Session 1 (June 2 - June 5) and Session 3 (July 14 - July 17).

During the Fall 2008 registration period, UCES will have extended hours the first and last week of registration, tba during the first week of registration and tba during the last week of registration.

During the Spring 2009 registration period, UCES will have extended hours the first and last week of registration, tba during the first week of registration and tba during the last week of registration. The extended hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Fridays, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Q. What methods of payment does UCES accept?

A. UCES accepts only Visa, MasterCard, checks and money orders. Cash is not accepted at UCES.

Q. Can I drop my classes and receive a refund?

A. Yes. Please read the refund page for dates and deadlines.

Q. How do I access my grades?

A. A CSULB transcript can be ordered through the Office of Enrollment Services. For more information call (562) 985-5487 or visit www.csulb.edu/enrollment. Go to Forms and Publications>Records and you can request your transcript, or visit the CSULB student web site, http://my.csulb.edu to view your unofficial transcripts.

Q. What if the courses I have selected have been cancelled?

A. Upon receiving the registration request, if the course/s have been cancelled UCES will first look for an alternate, if there is not one listed on the registration form we will return your registration form and payment to the address listed on the registration form.

Q. What is a campus I.D. number, and do I need one to enroll in Open University?

A. Yes, a campus I.D. number is issued by the university and is used in place of your Social Security number. A campus I.D. number is issued to all new students by the university for registration and identification purposes. If you are a current Open University student, you will continue to use your existing I.D. number that was assigned to you the previous semester.
