Meeting Topic:

IIS Approach to Process Right-Sizing

Presenter: Lawrence Goldstein
national Software Engineering training coordinator, Northrop Grumman Internal Information Services (IIS) business unit

Abstract

One of the most important areas that an organization needs to address when establishing standard engineering processes is how to allow tailoring of those standards to meet individual project needs. The more an organization's projects diverge in scope, application domain, or platform the more important it is to have a robust approach to process tailoring.

This presentation describes the process tailoring strategy employed by Northrop Grumman's Internal Information Services (IIS) organization. The IIS philosophy behind its tailoring method, as well as specifics of that tailoring method are discussed. In addition, two examples of pre-tailoring for commonly needed special circumstances are presented: legacy system maintenance and web development. The process needs of legacy systems differ greatly from those of most new development projects, and so IIS has developed several special process options to meet those needs. Of those options, the most commonly used tailoring approach for system maintenance is described. For web development, here again there are unique process needs to be met. An overview of the IIS approach --- one which marries agile/XP to SW-CMM/CMMI(SM) Level 3 practices --- is presented.

Northrop Grumman's Internal Information Services is a SW-CMM level three organization.

Your Presenter: Lawrence Goldstein is the national Software Engineering training coordinator for Northrop Grumman's Internal Information Services (IIS) business unit. He is a member of the IIS Software Engineering Process Group, and has over twenty-five years experience in systems and software development, maintenance, and program management.
