A Top Down, Bottom up View of S/W CMMI Level 5 - Warren Scheinin, Northrop Grumman Corporation

Abstract

In November, 2005, the Systems Development Operation organization was once again assessed at CMMI Level 5 in an externally-led SCAMPI-ARC A appraisal. This presentation examines two views of the impact of this success, emphasizing the substantial rewards of operating at CMMI Level 5, and providing lessons learned to those seeking similar success. In the bottom up view, “A Project’s Perspective of CMMI Level 5” (which won an outstanding presentation award at the 5th Annual NDIA CMMI Technology Conference last November) we take a project’s perspective showing that one of the benefits to being on a project after an organization is assessed at CMMI L5 is that projects personnel reap the rewards of operating with CMMI compliant processes. In the top down view, “Ways to Ensure the Culture Supports Level 5”, we see how, by creating a culture in which all new projects are expected to build upon the maturity of previous and concurrent projects, an organization can ensure acceptance of best practices and the continually striving for process improvements by project personnel. This is a pep talk for both managers and project workers to encourage the use of CMMI Level 5 compliant processes.
