September 14, 2007 - Part 2
Abstract
CMMI Level 3 requires the creation of a standard organizational process that is tailored by projects to create their defined process. Organizations typically design their standard organizational process and their tailoring approach without considering higher levels of maturity. Organizations typically write their processes in Word, provide the Word file to their projects, and ask projects to edit the Word file to create their defined process, which doesn’t provide the metrics necessary to do analysis for process improvements at CMMI Levels 4 and 5. At CMMI Level 3, companies should also think about how to design their tailoring approach to monitor their organization’s standard process for improvements. A statistical approach towards tailoring should begin during CMMI Level 3, so the tailoring metrics are available when the organization moves towards CMMI Levels 4 and 5.
This presentation will discuss the approach used at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems for tailoring the organization’s standard process. This tailoring approach provides the metrics necessary to determine when a process is too detailed, not enough detail, contains errors, or requires too much tailoring. This presentation will also discuss how the tailoring metrics are analyzed using statistical methods to better understand the effectiveness of the tailoring process, how the organization’s standard process is being tailored by different types of projects, and how much the organization’s standard process is evolving over time. This presentation will also cover how policy compliance metrics are used to better understand project compliance against organizational policies. Lastly, this presentation will discuss lessons learned from using this approach.
